What do angels look like? The appearance of angels is correctly rendered "very awesome". Angels appear in different forms depending upon their order of creation. For example. God's messenger angel, Gabriel, has the appearance of a man - Daniel 9:21. From Ezekiel 28:13-14 we learn that cherubim are exotic and beautiful-covered with precious stones. Ezekiel 1:23 tells us that cherubim have four wings, while seraphim have six wings, two that cover the face, two that cover the feet, and two with which to fly - Isaiah 6:2.
There is an organized structure in the angelic realm. Though opinion differs as to the placement of angelic offices, it is clear that the angelic host is part of a highly organized world of angel beings. For example, Daniel 10:13 shows that warring angels have a chief prince, Michael, who is also called an archangel. Seraphim and cherubim seem to be of a slightly lower rank, just ahead of ministering spirits -Hebrews 1:14. However, it may also be that the seraphim and cherubim fill a leadership role in worship while Michael leads the warring angels. As for the demons - evil angels -, Eph. 6:12 offers insight into the ranks of the evil angelic realm. Principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. From the information the Bible gives, we can see that the angelic realm is a distinctly structured society with different levels of authority or power endowed to each according to God's creative order.
Let us look at the Word of God and try to establish what the different categories of angels are.
The Angel of the Lord.
The Angel of the Lord Receives Worship.
One unusual "angel" - the Angel of the Lord - is different from all others in that this Angel received worship. How could this be? No angel can receive worship, which belongs to God alone. The angel Lucifer was expelled from heaven for trying to receive such worship. The mystery is solved in this text where the Angel of the Lord is revealed to be the Lord God
Acts 7:30-32
30 "And when forty years had passed, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai.
31 When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him,
32 saying, "I am the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and dared not look.
But how could Moses have seen God face-to-face and lived since Scripture clearly states the contrary (Ex. 33:20)? The answer: because they saw the Son of God, Jesus, known in the Old Testament as the Angel of the Lord - the "Messenger (Angel) of the covenant."
Malachi 3:1
"Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,"
Says the LORD of hosts.
Archangel.
The word "archangel" means "to be first (in political rank or power),"indicating that this is the highest rank of heavenly hosts but not supported by Scripture. The only archangel specifically in the Scriptures is Michael. It is likely his shout we will hear at the Second Coming.
1 Thessalonians 4:16
"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first."
Because Gabriel is prominent in the Bible and also because his name is derived from a root word meaning "strength" or "chief", which is characteristic of archangels, some conclude that he is also an archangel. Scripture does not support this opinion. Many scholars hold that Lucifer was an archangel before his fall (Ezekiel 28). However, this is only speculation based on the position and influence he held over the angels who fell with him.
Cherubim.
Cherubim are the created beings assigned to guard the throne of God (Ps. 99: 1) as well as the Ark of the Covenant and the mercy seat (Ex. 25:18-22; 37:7-9). Cherubim (plural for cherub) guarded the Tree of Life to keep man from eating of it and, therefore, living forever In his sins. Thus, contrary to popular belief, more than one angel guarded the entrance to Eden. Their appearance is not described clearly. One of Ezekiel's visions had them with two faces (Ezekiel 41:18), another had them with four faces and four wings (Ezekiel 10:21). The fullest description of cherubim is In Ezekiel 10, where they are closely related to the glory of God and have a part in its presence and its withdrawal, moving at the Almighty's direction.
The first reference to the "cherubim" is in Genesis 3:24, which should read "... at the East of the Garden of Eden He caused to dwell in a tabernacle the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned itself to keep the way of the Tree of Life." This was not simply to keep fallen human beings out; the presence of the "cherubim" suggests that redeemed man, restored to God on God's conditions, and would have access to the Tree of Life. (Revelations 22:14).
Seraphim.
These heavenly beings are mentioned only in Isaiah 6. They were human in form but had 6 wings, 2 for flying, 2 for shielding their faces and 2 for shielding their feet. They were stationed above God's throne and apparently led the worship.
Isaiah 6:2-6.
2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
3 And one cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!"
4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.
5 So I said: "Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts."
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar.
A burning, fiery, gliding, angelic being, the root is the verb seraph, "to set on fire, to burn." Accordingly, the seraphim may be angels of a fiery color or appearance, or flame-like in motion or clearness. Only in Is. 6:2-6 does the word appear as "seraphim"; in all the remaining five occurrences (Num. 21: 6-8; Deut, 8:15; Is. 14:29; 30:6), it is translated "fiery serpents" and appears along with scorpions and vipers.
The ministry of the seraphim is closely related to the throne and the praises of God. They are seen constantly glorifying God, extolling His nature and attributes, and apparently supervising heaven's worship. It is possible the seraphim are the praising angels of Ps, 148:2 though they are not specifically identified as such. Whereas cherubim are positioned beside and around the throne of God (Rev. 4:6), the six-winged seraphim are seen as hovering above the throne as they minister in worship.
Living creatures.
Ezekiel 1:5
Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.
Ezekiel 1:13
As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning.
Ezekiel 1:14
And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning.
Ezekiel 1:15
Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.
Ezekiel 1:19
And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
Ezekiel 3:13
I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels over against them, and a noise of a great rushing.
Fallen Angels.
These Angels "did not keep their proper domain" (Jude 6) and are now agents of the Adversary, bound under his dark dominion. Notice that these fallen angels are now "bound in everlasting chains" These are not the demons working with Satan as they are not bound yet and are most freely running around doing their own thing.
Genesis 6:1-2 (New King James Version)
1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
Jude 1:6 (New King James Version)
And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;
2 Peter 2:4 (New King James Version)
For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;
demons
The Scriptures reveal both good angels and evil angels. The evil entitles are those angels who rebelled with Lucifer and were cast out of heaven with him. Their minds and understanding have been covered with the horrible darkness of deception (the same tactic Satan still uses to lead his victims astray). They were created in God's original order to do His will, as those angels who continue in obedience to His throne. But they have joined Lucifer in his rebellion.
lucifer
Satan was once an angel called Lucifer, who, in love with his own beauty, fell into pride and self-centeredness. His rebellion manifests in five "I will" statements addressed against God (Isaiah 14:13-14). With five utterances he declares he will take the place of the Most High God. But Isaiah 14:15-20 reveal that God has the last word, as the Most High makes five responses: "Satan, you will:"
be thrown into hell;
be gazed upon (that is, made a spectacle);
be talked about (mocked, scorned);
be cast out of your grave like a carcass;
be alone.
God's "last word" on Satan is still applicable to any challenge he attempts to bring against any of the people of God.
nephilim
Genesis 6 (New International Version - UK)
1 When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,
2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
3 Then the LORD said, My Spirit will not contend with man for ever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years.
4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days - and also afterwards - when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
These Nephilim are the offspring between man and fallen Angels. They were half man and half angel. God sent the flood and these Nephilim died in the flood with everybody else, but their spirits lived on and therefore the Word tells us that "Nephilim were on the earth in those days- and also afterwards" as with David and Goliath.
